That mantel for sure is too small in scale for the larger surround. $50 is limited.... what style do you want? rustic, traditional?
Oh, yes, Sharon is right. It isn't the surround that needs improvement it is the mantel piece. If you have any renovators shops in your area, you would be able to buy a mantelpiece. . . not sure of cost though.
Here is a link for how to build one. Looks budget friendly and you may have scrap wood lying around that can be used. In addition the big box hardwares sometimes have a scrap wood pile that is free or cheap. The materials section of craigslist sometimes has someone selling off leftover wood from their project. Hope this helps

Try your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore- they may have a mantle, or a couple of porch columns that you could cut down to size. Add them and a couple horizontal boards to your mantle shelf to create a statement mantlepiece. Paint them all the same color, add a nice quotation stencil above the tile or an organic greenery spray there. With a limited budget you have to get creative, do a little legwork, but it's definitely do-able! Good luck... Post updates!
Oohhh... Check out this post about how to completely change the look of your tile- cheap!
