Great idea. Lots of manufacturers are now making leather with fabric seating.
A slipcover would work, or you could use a pet cover if you still want the original couch still showing a bit. The pet covers basically cover the seat part, and the top part of the arms.
I see no way all of these tears in the seat would look good with any repair...and the many hours it would take to do this....consider a slipcover until you can purchase a new or used one in good condition....there are many places which sell used furniture on consignment which often carry good quality pieces for very reasonable prices...much easier than trying to fix all this...
I really like the shape of the couch. I'd use a slipcover and think about recovering it.
OMGosh, we had an almost identical sofa when I was a kid. They called it tuxedo-style, and it split the same way. My Dad covered the bottom with a piece of strong upholstery fabric, like you would cover a bench. I'm not sure how he anchored it in the back though.

You could use Gaffer Tape across the Seams, or buy Vinyl Repair fabric that is sticky backed.
