It happens, not to worry, you can just reseason.

Scrub with salt and a lemon to remove the rust. Rinse clean. cover generously with oil (vegetable oil, coconut oil, peanut oil, lard) and heat in a slow (100 degree) oven for 6-8 hours. Do NOT use olive oil or any oil that has a strong taste or low smoke point.

The best information I have found on cleaning and maintaining cast iron cookware was at HobbyFarms.com... cleaning with a self-cleaning oven... or without one.... how to season (I found Crisco shortening worked better than oil and I repeated the treatment 4 times)... ... don't put it in the dishwasher, don't let it sit in the sink or with food in it, give it a very light coat of the shortening after every use and wipe most of that off with paper towels... don't put it away damp, dry completely and store with a layer of paper towels between the pans (they are prone to rust where they touch.
Oh... and avoid using soap, it removes the seasoning... a stiff dish brush and really hot water will remove most cooking residue.
Agree with scrubbing with salt and lemon to remove the rust, but I never use oil on cast iron it leaves a sticky scum that attracts dust and bugs. Best to use lard or I use the fat off a block of salt pork to season the pan in the oven. Let it melt, then use a paper towel wadded up and tongs to spread it over the whole inside of the pan. I leave in oven for a couple hours, and let it sit, then repeat again the next day to season well.
No problem. Wash the pan again, scrubbing with salt. You can use a plastic or steel wire scrubber, as long as you get the rust off. Dry the pan before you set it down. Then cover the inside and outside with cooking oil or Crisco, and sprinkle salt inside. Place it in a low oven (325*) for 30 min. Then let it cool and wipe inside and out with paper towels. Hang the pan on the wall, or stack in a dry cabinet with paper towels for padding and separation. And don’t fry on high heat, or leave the pan in water, or fail to wipe it out each time. ☺️
