Panel walls can look great - work with them! If they‘re too dark, paint them white. xx
I painted all the paneling in my former home after priming. Brightened the rooms up immensely and looked great!
Sand, stain or paint, seal. If you want to go from dark to lighter, you should probably use a coat or two of primer before painting. If the paneled wall are old and worn out, as opposed to vintage or antique, you probably need to remove the paneling and rebuild the walls. ☺️
We painted ours. First we used calking for all the connections then painted with aroma free Kilz primer, then painted as we wanted. We sponge painted and put a wallpaper border at the top in dining and living area. We loved it.
