Raised bed garden is maybe what you are describing?
You just need to build a box with no top or bottom. No more than 4' wide so you can reach. There are many ways to hold the corners together. I sacrificed interior space to make my boards interlock like Lincoln Logs, but metal "L" brackets in the corners will work too. I used treated lumber and plant vegetables in mine but some are so afraid of the pressure treatment that they won't. That is okay. You could use construction lumber knowing that it will have to be replaced in a couple of years. If construction grade cedar is available in your area it solves both problems but at a cost.
