I need to create faux wooden floors in three rooms.

I have the ability as an artist and have the drive to do this but unsure what wood to use. Marine plywood is optimum but so expensive. Any other suggestions? I intend to take pictures all the way with my tablet to share my journey.

I did this on the bare cement floor. Started with painting it with a base of brown paint. Then using a piece of wood cut to size of a board I traced around it with a permanent pen to simulate a panel. Then using a graining tool & darker brown paint I created the wood grain in the “boards”. Then using the ends of a paint brush I created nail heads at the ends of each board. Then I varnished the entire floor. It turned out fantastic. Hope you’ll try it.
