I also have a pet Chi. One year we sprayed our basement for spiders and other bugs using a commercial bug spray because we had to live in the basement while the upper portion of our house was being remodeled. My dog got very ill and nearly died. The vet said he was poisoned from the spray. So yes you are correct--you do need to be VERY careful of what you may have to use.

My first and only spider bite (to date), was a couple years ago. Went to the doctor, they gave me some ointment and that was it, no big deal.
Not meaning to downplay your arachniphobia, since you live in a wooded area, you will encounter them from time to time. It is a spider, you can conquer your fear, if for no other reason than for your tea cup baby! Careful using peppermint oil, can be harmful to pets. Know your source. Check with your vet too. In my area, essential oils have been all the rage in the past few years, some with not so great consequences. Vets have warnings on their websites about the use of essential oils. Birds are particularly susceptible. Something to keep in mind.
I couldn't resist posting this!
