Hi Christine, could you send a picture of your pass through and kitchen area? That would really help us give some ideas!

  • Can you provide a photo? The backsplash does not need to ""match" the existing formica, but should coordinate with it for a cohesive look. What color is the formica? The options are endless, what goes with the style of the rest of your kitchen? Tile? Stone? Glass?

If you have a sample of the formica or a clear picture of it that looks like the true color, take it with you to a store like Home Depot, Lowe's or a hardware store and see if they have samples you can take home to compare. Or, you could use a simple white backsplash that won't compete with the other finishes.

I personally love Large subway tile, unless it will fight with your brick. It can be beautifully installed vertically, thereby not competing with the brick. Fewer grout lines too. Your choice as to whether you want high or low gloss. Since I’m lazy but obsessive, I’d make my life easier with low gloss, but that might not suit you.

It rather depends on where you want people’s eyes to focus - on your brick or backsplash (nobody really looks at countertops).

And regarding your pass-thru, there are lots of texture and color options available. Check out Tile stores rather than HD or Lowe’s before committing.
