I’d like to convert my old fan lighting fixture that sits above my kitchen table to something more current. We live in an apt. where the kitchen is open to the living room. The living room is contemporary and has clean lines. The kitchen is a country French motif. Can you give me some ideas on what I can do? Im trying to save money and know there must be a way to convert this old fan.

New fan blades and a more stylish lamp to replace the globe would do wonders. Neither of them are partifularly difficult to replace. If you don't need either the fan or the light above the table, you could get rid of the light entirely and put in a more up-to-date hanging lamp or ceiling fixture.

You could take it apart and paint the downrod, motor housing (make sure you're careful to keep paint out of motor) and light holder. Get new blades and light fixture and you've got a new fan!

Make sure you get permission from the landlord in WRITING before doing anything. You don't want to compromise your security deposit. Remember any upgrades you do benefit the landlord. So be frugal.

Would it be possible to take the blades off and cover one side with removable contact paper, then put them back? That would be temporary, would hide the caning in the center of the blades that date the fixture and also quite frugal!!

I simply turned the caned fan blades over to a stained wood finish that was on the other side. Easy-peasy!
