Use candles
Solar powered lights, if you receive sufficient sun to charge the batteries, or sufficient numbers of battery operated lights suspended over the table atop a glass or plastic base.
You can buy lamp cord chain to hide a plug-in cord. Weave the cord in and out of the chain and then drape it along the ceiling using decorative plant hooks until you get to the wall where you can let the cord follow the wall down to a receptacle where you can plug the cord in. If you have a light switch near by, it is not that hard to put in a junction box and run a new line to a ceiling fixture.
Hi Shirley, You could get a swag light. Good luck!
Battery operated lights in an overhead position would be inconvenient and impractical. It will be physically awkward to climb up and down just to 'turn on/off' or to replace batteries for each individual light. It is also unlikely that they would give adequate lighting shining down on the dining table.
You can use a regular wall plug for the chandelier. :) Hang the chandelier where you want it with a cup hook, and swag the cord to the wall and down to the outlet. There are simple and attractive cord covers available for this purpose.
