Landscaping ideas for a sloping river frontage?
Just bought a cabin on the Peshtigo River. How can we landscape sloping yard going down to river to make it safer to walk around the yard and walk right up to the river?

Hi! what about terraces with steps in between?
you need to go horizontal and zig zag your path. the choice of materials is up to you..but i would do gravel. landscape material as a base then sand, then gravel. it will let the rain soak in, you may have to frame sections with treated timbers, to make steps in the steeper areas.
Hi Dez, Cynthia H. has it right - Terrace and steps . Start at the bottom with a flat area, then work back towards the cabin adding steps and terraces as you go. What do you doo with the spare soil, I hear you say! Well use it near the cabin to form sloping flower beds either side of the steps down to your first terraced area, where you might like to form an outside dining/entertaining space. Warning once done you may never want to leave it! It sounds as if it could be fantastic......... Enjoy the process...........
I would go with terraces, with steps and landings the same height as each terrace. On each terrace, you can plant perienials and ground cover. If you plant annual flowers, keep them on safe levels to work with. Use shrubs to help anchor the ground, also. I you want sand or river rocks to cover a terrace or two, understand that you will still have to weed, and that vines may invade quickly. Enjoy your lake house! Best wishes, Dez. ☺️
you are very welcome . i've visited many a park along the Mississippi river. don't let any one fool you into thinking Iowa is flat land.
Hello again,
So pleased to have been able to help! Enjoy the process and look back with Pride!
I visited someone with a lot like this, and they had a wide wooden walkway built, stepping down the slope, with a wide wooden deck for lounging near the water (but high enough so the highest water level of the year didn't reach it).
I would lay either railroad ties or decorative rock or bricks down front of the slope. Fill in area making it a flat yard out to the bricks. Plant grass seed to fill in. Next, I would make steps out of bricks or rocks, down to the river for access. The
number of steps will depend on how far out you go on the slope of your yard to fill-in.
I really hope you understand what I'm saying here. It's pretty simple.
