How to remove kitchen cabinets?

We would like to remove a set of cabinets to achieve the open look concept. What do we need to do to remove them from the soffit and are there any special tools required? What kind of paint should we use Semi Gloss or Chalk? Your thoughts & comments will be greatly appreciated!

Gracias,

Hi Lucky. You first must determine what is in the soffit(s) don't use chalk paint as it would need a finishing top coat. A semi gloss or gloss finish should be used on kitchen cupboards.

Thanks Emily, I'll paint them with semi gloss which will be much easier to keep clean! 👍🏼xx

The cupboards look like they are fastened at the top inside - look for screws or nails and they will be easy to take down. In my kitchen, I just finished painting my cabinets with semi-gloss paint and they look very nice.

First you need to find out how they are attached, and what they are attached to. Just by looking at your photograph I would expect them to be attached on the top. Pull out the screws while someone (or 2) hold the cabinets. Now you’ll have some drywall repairs to make, I would guess. For that you will need some of the mildew resistant type, not just plain old drywall. You will need a utility knife, wide putty knife, drywall tape, joint compound, drywall screws, etc.

Thank you so much for the advice. I will look to see how they're attached. I have a feeling they've been there for quite sometime! Xx

They're screwed to the soffit from the inside top. Also they are screwed to each other on the side frame. They would be easier to remove individually.
