Weedblock, sand then pea gravel
Yes, we did this and used weedblock then pea gravel. You'll need a way to "contain" the pea gravel though so it doesn't spill over into the grass. We used 4x4s in one area we did this to and tree branches in another area and landscaping bricks in another area. So that's pretty much it- landscaping fabric, pea gravel, and a way to contain it.
Hi Bonnie, There is something called Co-base. I'm not sure how to spell it. You can buy it at Home Depot, in the nursery section/seasonal. This is like rubber, I'm not sure if the have different depth sizes. Start at one end, it needs to be 2/3 rds of it should be supported by large nails to hold it up. Pour your stone down, now 1/3, rd will be the edge of the base. You can also use pieces of wood to hold it also. Once the stone is down remove the nails/wood. I hope you understand this. They have different colors of Co-base. Best of Luck !
I recently added a walk path from gathered rocks and love it. However I was thinking next year I may add wood steps or stepping stones in the mix. I've attached images, it may give you some ideas.
