Is this a stove? If it is dripping like that then either the exhaust is it working for your grease traps are full.
What is dripping? Is it grease or is it just sweating?
Deb,
In addition to what has already been suggested, you mentioned getting past the fan. Depending on your type of hood (you can probably download a schematic drawing from the manufacturer) the fan unit should be removable. There is typically a multi-wire plug connector connecting the fan to the controls. There are screws that hold the fan braces or mounting bracket. See if you can disconnect the fan wires, remove the screws and drop the fan unit down. You can clean both the fan blades and see what is going on above the fan. Does your duct work go up through the cabinet? The drips on the outside of the hood are a bit of a mystery.
that is a vent a a hood wall vent
go to 2nd picture of inside unit
remove the 2 screws on the bottom and remove the L shape cover and place in hot sudsy water to remove grease
next take off the metal box with the 2 large holes, remove the 2 latches on the sides be careful it's a little heavy and awkward, this box contains the grease trap if it's full it will probably spill all over the stove so cover the stove with newspaper, and proceed to clean the fan and motor that will be still attached to the unit, make sure the 2 black flaps that prevent the cold air from entering house is freely moving and not stuck with grease. reinstall in reverse order
added comment you may also want to get on a ladder and check the flap at the exterior wall vent and make sure that's not stuck in place with grease
All of these are helpful! It’s an ugly project and we have not yet pulled it apart to disect further. Thank you and I may follow up with further inquiry once we attack this!!
Deb, are you religiously exhausting the moisture EVERY time you cook? It almost appears to me that you are getting condensation that just happens to have a little grease in it. If you only turn the vent on for SOME of your cooking tasks, then moisture is going to build up. I suggest cleaning it, as you have planned, and then be sure to turn it on every time you cook on the stove or oven.
I've seen this before. Grease dripping from the top of a range hood like this means the fans not turned on while cooking, the grease cups/traps are full or the cavity is blocked. It doesn't look that bad and any degreaser will clean that up. Regularly cooking meat or fish creates the grease laden vapors that cause this.
