HGTV was definitely not the first to feature this on TV, this Old House and Bob Villa did this years before HGTV hit the air waves. I remember open concepts from back in the 70s.
All of them, I have been watching since they started airing in 1994 / 1995. Was and still is one of my favorite channels. Open concept started becoming popular in the 80's where I live. Mostly on new builds. Then people started remodeling older homes. Some, in my opinion, they ruined all the charm and character of an old home, but that's the way it goes.
