Usually late fall or after leaves die
Rosebushes, get a good pair of gloves and a good pair of sheets and start trimming. For fall, cut the seasons growth in half. Then prune again in spring.
Cannas, you can't. If you want them to bloom next year you need to cut them off about 6 inches above the soil. Then dig out the corms, clean them up by trimming off the roots and anything damaged, store in dry peak moss I a cool dark place. Do not let them freeze. In the spring they will be ready for potting.
Where do you live? Our cannas stay in ground year round. I am on Zone 9.
