Rather than replacing my damaged hollow doors, I would like to fix them and paint them. Any suggestions on how to repair holes that are fairly big?

Hi Sandy. This is one of my projects on my to do list. First I will sand the whole door. I plan on filling any holes and scratches with wood putty, letting it dry, and sand to blend in. Repeat if need be. Then I will stain them and put a few coats of Polyurethane on. Good Luck!

Well your picture, gets cut off before any holes can be seen...but here's an idea. Why don't you cut 2 squares or rectangles for the top and bottom section of the door, using either thin wood or wood panel , or beadboard , center them , covering the hole , then trim them out and paint the door.

I like Pamela's answer. Alternately, you could cut two pieces of wood, two so that you can get them in through the hole, then glue them in side by side to cover the entire inside of the opening, fill with wood filler, sand it and paint the door.

A new door, slab door would be about $22-29 dollars. I would buy a new one..

The amount of time to "repair" a hole in a cheap door isn't worth it. A new door from Lowes or Home Depot is faster and is easier to paint if that's your wish. By the time the repair pieces are accumulated and work done, the job is more costly than a new door.

You can usually find free doors if you look on CL or your local online garage sale sites.

Habitat Restore may have some inexpensive ones as well. I was thinking somehow use the same mesh as for drywall but smear on wood filler and then sand. wood filler is paintable.

You cut out the hole to a square or rectangle, then put a piece or two of 1x 1/2" wood into the hole using glue across the opening. Then cut out a piece of wood veneer the size of the hole and glue or screw onto your wood cross piece(s). Then use wood filler to fill-in the seams around the patch, sand and then stain, or prime and paint.

Have you thought about swapping it out with a closet door?

Then put the side with the hole to the inside of a closet and just patch it any old way because it won't be seen. Personally I would use the foam filler, shave it flush and paint to match.

So sorry! For some reason I didn't see the full picture the first time. Yes there is no way wood filler will work on that big of a hole. I have repaired holes using a couple of shims to fill the hole. It can be tricky to get them in place. Then you can use the wood filler. Another Option is to get a thin piece of wood to add to the bottom of the door to cover it. It would almost be like a kick plate. Good Luck!
