Adding a darker colored paint might help "shrink" the room. Adding decorative wall and top of cupboard knick-knacks or dishes/pots may help. An island or seating area is a good idea as long as it doesn't impede you work flow or create more problems than it solves. Some people with small kitchens may not appreciate your complaints about a big kitchen.
Hello Debra, Lucky you, Table and Chairs with tablecloth and flowers. Plants on Window ledge. Second hand Stores always have them in stock, just a matter of choosing one that suits or buying one to make your own by painting etc.
Measure your kitchen exactly and take pictures from four different angles )four walls) Graph the measurements out on graph paper, including what space is taking by counter, appliances etc. Include windows and doorways. Now you know how much space is left relative to what is being used. There is a lot you can do to de-instutionalize a space. . . use pattern, color, wall hangings,
Choose your style and add decor that reflects your personality. You can use command hooks to hang them so you won't have to put holes in your wood and tile. Display your favorite dishes. If you are a coffee drinker, add a coffee bar. Consider hardware, if you don't like it you can paint or replace.
Color has always been my favorite, low cost update. Warm up the room with a pretty color. If you have the space for a large island, I would go for it. I made my own, for a smaller kitchen from an old desk, so the cost wasn't bad: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/build/furniture/a-desk-upcycle-into-a-small-island-cart-part-2-37590291

Add color and accessories. Kitchens are easy to decorate because dishes and small appliances come in fun colors. Tea towels can add colors and pattern as well. Bowls of fruit, fresh flowers. Don't forget art. It doesn't have to be precious. You can find art prints on etsy for affordable prices.
