Asphalt shingles come in 20, 30, 40 year warranties. If you can afford it and want better resale value, go with 40 year shingles. You'll need to choose between flat or 3D shingles, which are more attractive.
We bit the bullet and had a steel roof put on. The roof looks like asphalt, but it is guaranteed for for life and our kids lives! Guaranteed for hail, high winds up to140 mph, and our insurance dropped because steel does not burn.
Slat will last forever than asphalt. One thing to consider is to make sure your roof structure can handle the weight of slate.
If you opt for a metal roof, note that you will have significantly more sound transmission into the house during rain and or hail storms.
