Fireplace, surround flooring ?
After removing carpet and putting in hard wood, we discovered that there is an 8” concrete flooring on each side of the fireplace, that hardwood can not be applied to. Any ideas? The brick is white washed?

Use adhesive
Get a 16" square tile in a color/pattern that you like. Cut it down the center and use a floor adhesive to set it in place. You can grout around it if you like. Cheers!
Can you get more brick and white-wash it too? Then it would be like a step-down hearth. (You could even put a plant or two --- or interesting vase on the "step."
Hi there, Add more Bricks or make storage boxes, maybe?
I like Nan's suggestion with the step-down and plants or something on the step down. I think that would look really nice and match the hearth vs. using tile or anything else.
I would consider ceramic tile for the space. I know you can easily install tile over concrete and you could match the white in the brick or the floor or add a contrast and accent the dark color from the door.
You might like these thin bricks on the sides - they come in white or you could paint:

Have you ever considered changing the colour of all the brick area? If so, another option may be to extend the brick out (with new bricks) to match the width on either side of the hearth, then paint all the brick ( old and new) with a new colour.
Thank you
I would add in bricks to extend your hearth. I think that will look the most natural. You could white wash them the same as the others.
