Who do I call?
My laundry room has smelled bad (once in August and once today) both after a big rain. In August it disappated the next day. Hopefully the same thing will happen today. I had my plumber come check the dryer and all the parts the last time, but he found nothing. It COULD be coming from the air vent on the ceiling but I cannot tell. It is not the pea trap smell (I put water in there anyway just to be sure but smell is still in the laundry room). Does anyone have a suggestion on what this could be or who I should call? Thank you!

If you have one of those new low-water front-loading washers, they do stink... the smell is mold.. I run a load of whites with bleach. Then I never close the door, I put the dryer sheet box in the edge to hold it slightly open.
Sounds like you have done some excellent investigating. I would try calling an exterminator. In my area, inspections are free. Never know what they will find and they know how to find every nook and cranny. Worth a try at least.
Hi Eliz,
Go back to Sharon's answer. If you have a front loading HE washer, it could be coming from behind the gasket. This is a widespread problem that happens to a lot of people. The fix is to clean behind the gasket (I'd use vinegar, but others like bleach. Vinegar actually kills mold while bleach can sometimes just remove the color). If you do this on a regular basis it should take care of the problem. Sharon's idea of keeping the door open might also help. Wishing you the best.
Thank you all so much for your thoughts. The two times it has happened, the smell goes away after a couple of hours, so I do not think it is something lingering in the washer. And it's only after a big rain storm (that happens after days of no rain).

If you live in town, that sounds like it could be due to a city sewer problem since it only lasts for a few hours and after a heavy rain storm. If you do live in the city, maybe contact the city and ask if they have flushed their sewer drains/systems in that area or if they could possibly do that.. Explain to them that you have an awful smell after a hard rain. Just an idea..
