  • What zone are you in? Typically tomatoes are a spring / summer crop.

You can grow tomatoes hydroponicly in the “ off season”. There are a few you tube videos on the subject. Most tomatoe plants need 6 weeks to be mature and start growing the fruits. My area is loosing the natural pollenaters, so I have to hand pollinate.

I agree with Naomie, they are normally planted in the spring when the soil temperature reaches about fifty degrees. Dig a deep hole, you will want to plant about one third of the plant in the soil. You really do end up with a fuller, stronger plant. Make sure the soil is good, I usually fill in the hole with potting soil if I have some around. I use a good brand of tomato or tomato and vegetable fertilizer, the granular extended release kind, then you don't have to remember to fertilize all the time. It is also, if you use the kind you mix in water, to remember to water the soil, not the plant. If you foliar feed vegetables, you will get big healthy green plants but little to no produce. I hope this helps you to plant tomatoes for your garden. Remember that you will have to support the plants with stakes or cages. The time until you wait on ripe tomatoes depends on what types you plant. The larger the tomato, usually the longer the growing season until the tomatoes are mature. I usually plant a couple of types of really large tomatoes, a couple of different things like sweet 100's (very fruitful little guys) and a couple of things like Italian paste and Early Girl. That way I have different ones coming ripe at the beginning and still fruiting right to the first frost.
