What is there to organize? I have mine divided by subject matter as that is what makes most sense, just like the library and the Dewey Decimal System.
If you are looking to "style" or "stage" a bookcase as that is a completely different matter. Flip through magazines, peruse Pinterest and design sites for ideas.

Break up the items so it is just not a solid line of books. Good place to place vases, framed pictures, small artwork like carvings and other nick knacks. Just be sure not to over crowd items. Remember less is more.
They may be called a bookcase, but my 6ft. tall one holds my jeans, capris, sweats folded into thirds and also all my tanks, tees rolled and then put on the shelf by category color and size(aren't we all hanging on to those that we hope to get back into someday?) so much easier than pulling the shirts out if folded and stacked. This frees up so much closet space!
I try to do as Arlene does, I organize mine by subject, if possible, then by size if there are different sizes. Some I lay down, some I stand up, it all depends on the shelf size and just having some different. I have bookshelves where I intersperse knock knacks, and some that are just solid book shelves. I put paperbacks in their own bookshelves. I have so many books that I put my paperbacks two deep to conserve space. I have six bookcases just in my back room. Most all of them have been read and reread so many times that I don't remember!
If you're a reader, organize by topic (gardening, cooking, religion, crafts, etc.)
If you're visual, try by color or size, and insert small objects among the books for visual interest.
alphabetical by author
Several ways to do it. Most have already been said here. The only other one I also use is a section of borrowed books. I keep these together apart from my own so I am sure to return them. Otherwise it is by subject, novels in alphabetical order. Disorder in a book case is expected if you really use them. Adding interesting items between or in front of the books softens the look of "intellectual mayhem"! Lol
Donate to library, any used store, goodwill, if you haven’t read anything by now, you never will.
Largest or Heaviest books to lower shelves.
