Does it need leveled due to ground settlement or sloping mortar?
If it's ground issue, it may recur, even if you were able to remove the top 4-5 courses and re-brick/re-mortar.
Is the door rusted, or the interior, as well? Easiest fix may be to apply a rustoleum product to stop the rust, then re-paint. I'm not sure you'd be able to locate only the mailbox door. Alternatively, can you slide in a plastic insert to fit the interior section?
As a mail carrier , I see this happen quite often. Most people never change them . A big issue is eventually the door breaks off. Look inside the box & see if you see a manufacturer , if so if the door is replaceable, but an extra one , to keep on hand !!! To try to fix the mailbox , sand off the rust , & spray paint it, inside and out. I would leave the door open when drying ( inside & outside part )
as for the leveling issue , I don't understand what is wrong ? Was the box put in , not level ? Or is the whole structure not level ? If it's the structure, check with the HOA to see who is responsible for it , maybe they are...or if not maybe they can recommend something .
The inside of the mailbox is badly rusted and the entire structure is tilted to one side.
Thank you for the recommendations and please advise any other recommendations you may have.
Hi, if you can't find a replacement door, you can always use the old one as a template and build one out of wood.
Oklahoma here. Same mailbox as yours. With the amount of rain we get, even in a single storm, you probably have some erosion at the base of the brick structure which can lead to the level problem you refer to. We are not at that point yet, so I don't have any suggestions for fixing that. We have had the rusting issue, and as others have suggested we used Rustoleum spray paint inside and out and it has worked well for the last three years and looks so much better than it did. The rust protection of Rustoleum spray paint is outstanding and I highly recommend it. Best wishes.
Due to this leaning a little bit, all of the mail is soaking wet To the point that every envelope is completely ruined.
Is there any way you can seal the interior seams with a waterproof caulking in a smaller tube that would fit into this space?
You may have to involve your HOA, as the situation has possibly occurred with other owners. Your only other alternative may be to remove the entire structure and have ir rebuilt on a solid footer. If you do install a new one, apply Rustoleum to the new mailbox, as well as waterproof sealand before bricking over the mailbox.
The new structure should be built with weepholes to provide a space or spaces for water to escape, as is the case with brick homes.
If it's leaning it could perhaps topple onto someone so perhaps it needs rebuilt rather then lifted up on one side.
