Fill pot with water, vinegar or a combination of both, enough to cover the gunky bits. Bring to a boil and gently simmer for 10 minutes or so. Turn off, do not dump out contents, let cool. Wash as normal. If you have any pesky weeds, if you use the vinegar method, you can kill them with that. Double duty.
Try soaking the pot in very hot water with some water softener added to soften the stains, try a light scrub with a metal scrubber (lightly) after a few hours. A lot will come off. You may want to repeat the process.
If it's on the outside, use oven cleaner.
If you are very, very light handed, you will be amazed at what a lightest "weight" Magic Eraser will do to remove these spots (they come in 3 different varieties for light, medium, and heavy stains).
I dampened the bottom of the outside of the pot and used very light strokes with the softest Magic Eraser. I even tried it inside, using exceedingly light, short strokes. Voila! No more brown stains. It looks new again.
Barkeeper's Friend with a scrubby pad should do the trick.
