An interior fireplace has many Building Code Requirements that are there for your safety and your liability. Carbon dioxide poisoning & fires are deadly.
Go on-line yo your local Building Dept and Research their interpretation of the International Residential Code on Fireplaces. If you can’t find anything, call them and ask them if they have a hand out or if they’ll print the Codes requirements for you, to go pick up. They want to help you.
Then plan, draw up what you want to do, make sure you have developed a budget, then send out your drawings to qualified contractors with these (suggested) stipulations in a written contract:
You will expect them to pull the appropriate permits. (Over-simplified, This makes a 3-way contract between you, the City & your contractor and eliminates the liability & any design flaws).
You will buy all the materials, so that you don’t pay them to do the shopping.
You will be their co-worker/gopher and will be working along side of them.
You will pay them in increments of completion. (Do not pay them 50% down up front, when you are buying the materials.)
Be sure and photograph Work Progress.
