Buy fish tank rocks the ones that are flat on side and glue them to drywall patch cover the net type or something similar to then use grout glue to place them on wall and then grout in spaces you can use all same colors or mix n match to your color scheme .

Bead board, painted or stained. Looks great. Install vertical.
I second the beadboard! When you paint it be sure to use semi- gloss or shinier to ensure it’s scrubable. :)
