also depends on whether the carpet is wool or a synthetic -- and the KIND of synthetic.

I would take a damp cloth and put it over the sticky area to moisten it and take up the sticky part, then tackle a stain if there is one. Blot, don't rub.
Dampen a clean cloth or paper towel with rubbing alcohol. Then, press the alcohol into the carpet. Rub slightly to remove the sticky residue. If it is stubborn, you can lay an alcohol-soaked cloth over the spot for about 10-15 minutes before rubbing.
