Try sanding lightly with a fine/extra fine steel wool. You may end up removing so of the finish.
Remove and soak in WD4O. Should .wipe off.
Hi Neomie! You can clean the rust off with a Brillo pad in a pinch. You will need to clean the surface thoroughly of any residue. Then spray paint a new metallic finish and/or clear coat to prevent future rust.
I soak mine for 24 hours in white vinegar and the rust will just rub off, then polish it up with WD40.
