After painting the top of our wood coffee table, I now need to know what works best for a hard, durable finish to prevent damage. Chalk paint was used. Thanks for your help.

Most suggest wax on chalk paint. I never used chalk paint. I always use three coats of a water based polyurethane on any painted surface to protect the paint from chipping and damage. Water based dries fast, does not yellow like oil based.

    Consider using coasters too.

I am like William, I have never used chalk paint, but most say they use wax. I always use poly to topcoat painting or restaining as it is so durable when you put on numerous coats and so easy to care for.

Hi. Have a piece of glass cut the size of the table and use spacers before putting down. The glass should not be window glass. Doing it right will last you a lifetime. And the glass will ensure your hard work is never marred.

I hate chalk paint. Wax needs to be replaced every so often and also mars. I use a good acrylic paint and then poly. Lacquer can be used also but not on light colors as it yellows.

I have used chalk paint on a dining room table. I put three coats of polyacrylic on it and it has stood up to everything we do to it, even the grandkids' art projects. There is no hard and fast rule about what to put over chalk paint. Use what works for you. I use polyacrylic on anything that will be getting a lot of use. I even have some chalk painted pieces that I haven't put any coating on that are still doing fine after years of use, but those pieces aren't used heavily.

  • Same as Bijous, get glass or plexi glass cut to fit. Plus no worries if someone sets a cold or hot drink or item on the table.
