Are vintage refrigerators energy hogs or not?

Unless you have an energy efficient fridge, you have an energy hog. The older the fridge, the more electricity it takes to run it. Just about every year they come out with new models that are more energy efficient than the last models.

Old refrigerators are energy hogs. The older they are the more energy they use.

How vintage? Since I am in the suburbs of a major metropolitan city, I can find someone to fix almost anything. Is it worth it? Depends what you want. Yes the older models can be energy hogs. I am more into fixing than tossing, unless you really notice a difference in your electric bill. One of the best refrigerators I ever had was an old 1930's model and I regret selling it. A new, decent energy efficient refrigerator isn't cheap. Don't let others influence you, go with your gut. If your old one can be fixed and last long enough to save for a new one, then go for it.

Djd, I'd say no, a refrigerator was purchased in 1954, and its still running. This was purchased new for my husbands milk, when he was a baby. Aloha!

These frigs are not energy hogs, you guys are 100 percent wrong. These frigs are. From days when houses had max power of 60 amps. Could not be energy hogs cause the power was not at the houses. Today we're at standard 200 amps. These frigs get rated energy hogs, cause door seals are rotted out, that can be easily replaced, they're put in heat soaked garages, lake cottages, where AC is turned off, and run all day cause they can't keep up. These frigs I measured run at 3 amps when they kick on. They have a life of 80 plus years to run. I have a 1959 ge frig that my grandma gave me. Looks new, I have it right off my kitchen as a second frig. Thing is cool looking and has out ran the most expensive frigs I bought. I'm tired of people calling these frigs energy hogs, repeating what other people say. 70s 80's frigs are terrible on energy, while different setup then these basic systems.

Anymore green minds want to chime in, and tell me and everyone to get rid of vintage refrigerators cause they are energy hogs. Pre 1960's, Bring it on..... If you guys have one, and it don't work, Call an antique dealer, They will pick it up and pay you for it, cause they know what they bring in if they work and look good. Don't repurpose them like other green minds would do, get them fixed or sell to those who will fix them and make them run...

Come on you green people that think pre 1965 refrigerators are energy hogs. No one will even comment anymore. Energy hogs they are not. draw about max 3 amps. You get the door seal fixed, (which you can easily buy replacement for), (very easy to change) and it runs, and looks in great shape, I seen these frigs bring in $800 to $1200 bucks on ebay and other for sell sites. I have one from my grandmother from 1959, looks in perfect shape runs great, in my coffee bar area right off the kitchen. I also have a new samsung frig. It cost me $2400. 9 years later the pc inverter board blew out, $100. I changed it. You pay someone it would be $300. I would be at $2700. next 5-10 years, another frig would be at $2500. My 1959 frig is still running. No one says to my to me about my samsung wow you have a nice frig. That 1959 GE everyone comments about.
