How to add a handrail to a narrow staircase!
Check your local hardware store and look at the various handrail wall brackets they have. Most extend out to about 3 inches. Be sure to install them into wall studs for strength and durability.
Hi Barb! The most important thing is getting the proper anchors and size you need that will keep the rails in securely and safely. I would stop in at Home Depot or Lowe's and talk to someone in that department. They are very helpful and can guide you into what lengths, types of items you will need. Best Wishes to you for a great holiday season!

If you're looking for something low profile for the narrow stairs, try using plumbing pipe and shorter flanges for attaching the pipe to wall studs.
using a 2x4 and a 2x6 . use 2x4 screwed to the wall laying flat. lay 2x6 on top of 2x4 again screw this to wall threw the 2x4. round over the top edge of the 2x6. this will give you a finger area 1.5 inches off the wall. you loose 3" in width in the stair well. top of railing should never be higher than 36"off the nose of the step.
