How can I move a Rose of Sharon bush?

Thanks Nancy..that's the problem..I don't know where I am moving to, and their soil and lighting just yet...so I thought putting them back in a 5 gallon pots and keeping them alive would allow me some time to figure that out..what do you think? thanks so much

If you aren't moving until spring, by then you will be able to see what the lay of the land for your bushes will be. Just wait to transplant them until you have the spots amended and ready. If you don't know the soil, just dig the hole deeper and wider than you normally would and use good potting soil and peat moss, etc. to plant it in and you know it will have a good start. I know our local Home Depot has the black planting pots for sale that are probably the same as you purchase the plant in, if not, you could even put them in garbage bags with soil until you can plant them. Just don't let the roots freeze if it gets cold in the spring once you dig them up or the roots could get bit and may not recover. I, too live in zone four and the weather can change overnight very quickly and unexpectedly, so once they are dug up I would keep them in the garage where they are more protected and take them out when it is nice during the day. Don't forget to water them and make sure what you put them in drains so that they don't get root rot. A few years ago I took out some sad shrubs and turned that shaded garden into a hosta garden, the ones I took out were just plopped into terracotta pots with their soil and they stayed good all summer until I knew where I wanted them.
