Good Morning Amy, I just did mine. It was the ugly cheap wood look. I painted it with chalk paint and then added highlights with unicorn spit. I have not sealed it yet but here is a pic.
Sometimes just changing the hardware can drastically change the look. Or you can paint it. Clean it well, sand lightly and paint with a good paint. I like enamel for cabinets. Good luck!
