How to finish (in black) a new unfinished fireplace mantel?
I purchased a new wood fireplace mantel unfinished because it didn't come in black. What's the process to make it hold up to heat and look nice?

There is a black heat resistant paint on the market. Tremclad comes in either a spray or a can, in gloss or matte. I have painted wood with Tremclad and it works well. Krylon also makes heat resistant paint.
