Hi Carol! We did our very small bathroom a year ago, and yes we had to take our toilet out. We put tile down and it looks really nice. Here are some videos we used. Good luck to you!

Yes...take the toilet out.
Hi Carol, taking the toilet out will probably make it easier if you don't have a tile cutter, but it's a bit of a mission. This video will show you how to cut the tiles to fit around the toilet - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHUUsncikxA
Definitely remove the toilet. It isn't much fun, but it also will make the job easier.
If you're new to tiling and want an easier option, we used groutable vinyl tile in our main floor bathroom

Hi Carol, you don't have to remove the toilet, but you will need to cut tile to go around the toilet.

It will look better if you tile under the toilet but you can but it up next to it if you don't want to fool with it. If you take it out, make sure to replace the wax ring with a new one to avoid leaking issues.
Yes, lift the toilet and remove it, while you are at it, replace the ring.
