Rent a carpet shampooer and use the upholstery attachment
Resolve carpet cleaner works very well. Spray it on carpet, scrub in with scrub brush, let set, then vacuum.

This is Linda. Kelli is right, but first vacuum the entire staircase with the upholstery and crevice attachments. Look for spots and pretreat them. I use an equal mix of vinegar & water with a few drops of Dawn. Spray it on then scrub if necessary. Now use the carpet shampooer. I do use the upholstery & crevice attachments with the shampooer to get into all of the corners and creases. You can use carpet shampoo or add about 1 cup of vinegar to the water in the shampooer.
