I’ve seen people cut down peel-n-stick vinyl floor tile into long ceramic tile shapes and stick them on the wall.
The cutting will require making sure the cuts are square. I can list tools if you want.
Very easy to cut around things like outlets.
At less than $1 a square foot, it’s cheap and easy.
