There are some great ideas on the site below. You might get inspired. I particularly like using pots with flowers so you can replace as needed. I would also hang some decor item on the wall.

Thank you Ana! Yes, I think containers and decor are my best bet since this is a rental. I've been visiting a lot of nurseries and have some ideas; I may even incorporate a few mirrors because the space receives limited sunlight.
does this area get much sun? myself I would put in a nice rock water fountain (picture) that also has lighting, then ceramic flower pots of various sizes and plants that are either for sunny or shade...one nice plant to put in one of the pots is elephant ear placed near the fountain
Are you able to paint the walls? If so, I'd start there. I agree with Ana on some decor items on the wall as well.
Regardless of painting the walls or not, I'd put in a bunch of potted plants in the gravelled area. Maybe a small chair and table just outside the door.
Or, put in some pavers to make the patio bigger under the window. I'd still use potted plants to spruce up the area a bit though.
Good luck!
I would put an artificial palm tree, and other artificial plants on different levels in Large colourful pots. They will be easier (than real plants with heavy messy dirt) to move when you do, never need watering, sunlight, spraying, or clipping.
Then wind LED mini lights through the leaves and keep plugged in after dark, on a timer if you like. This will add needed depth, light, and colour to the patio, and will soften the harsh drab wall.
Faux boxwood hedge or greenery panels may be another option for you, as they are not permanent.
Thanks everyone! The trouble with this area is a lack of light, lots of flooding when it rains (no drainage), and it faces the front of the house so no painting except a fresh coat of that yellow.
I wanted to add faux shutters and a planter at the window
A fragrant tree by the door
Lots of potted plants
I can try a chair but it has to be uber small
What is under the white rock area? Is it blacktop, or dirt?
What about a statue or even better a series of statues of the same type eg giant fish or concrete orbs at different heights. Or a series of large planters without plants? Or a tile or wood artwork against the wall.
plant nice ivy .. make faux waterfall
Large Mirror on Wall to reflect in more light. Pot Plants Table and Two Chairs or Bench. Wall Picture etc.
