I use old decorative and souvenir plastic trays, but the old cafeteria trays seem to be the sturdiest. You can sand and paint and seal these trays to match your counters or decor. I use one under the Mr. Coffee and cups. Another sits under the Kerrigan and mugs to protect an antique cabinet shelf. PLEASE POST!

Had you thought of putting in concrete?
I am not so sure you can cover it up but have you thought of stenciling the tiles? You can paint the tiles then stencil each one with a stencil which I have seen and looks beautiful. It needs to be sealed well with a poly sealer.
Rustoleum puts out refinishing kits, other brands too.
