How do I get lavender to grow?

I have difficulty getting lavender to grow I love the look and smell and would love to use in cooking and for my henhouse but it never does well. I have tried multiple places variety and read numerous articles for care with no luck, any suggestions.

Hi Beth, here is a site that tells you which ones to plant in the type of conditions you have. It says that hybrids are easier to grow. It gives a lot of great information that should help you to grow lavender.

Most plants die because of overwatering. Lavender needs full sun,long days and drought like conditions.Doesn't like humus soil (lots of organic matter)Good drainage( if in pot terra cotta pot) is best. It's extremely hard to get started & grow from seed or keep immature/small plants alive,4-6" pot size is good starter size,best if it has woody stalk.Does not transplant well so when you get it needs acclimated to new area before transplanting or put in lrg pot and left in it. Do not disturb the roots when you are transplanting it the less shock the better keep them intack in dirt they are in. You did not state where you live? Temp. climate? are you growing inground or pot? moving indoors in winter? Hi Beth! Don't think I can add anything more to Lynn's answer! Mine grew like a weed in heavy soil with lots of afternoon sun. I have had problems with dill and parsley and friends thought I was crazy because they are supposedly so easy to grow! I was finally successful with poorer soil and planted much earlier in the season...so simple, who knew? Try again...I hope there is an easy combination of soil, water, light and timing that will give you success!
Hi Edie, thanks for your response I am definitely not going to give up....Its almost personal at this point! Like your strange finding with the parsely I will eventually find what is going to work in the lavender department at my house.

Lavender is a Med. plant and grow best in warm sunny places with well drained soil
