How can I make my fireplace look bigger?
I have a gas fireplace. It’s solid wood; mahogany. It’s 3 feet 8 inches tall and 4 ft. long. I just think it would look so much better if it was taller.
Paint in lighter colors. Have good lighting. Use lighter colored furnishings and accessories. Do not overcrowd the room with furniture.
Hello there, Use pale shades on walls and woodwork and diagonal floor covering or tile in alternate ways.
Use smaller furniture. Don't try to use a sectional or a sofa/chaise combo. These tend to fit only one way and will limit your ability to arrange your furniture, especially if a room has more than 3 doors. A 3-seat sofa and two chairs will give you more versatility. If you also watch TV in this room, the chairs can be turned as needed for viewing or conversation. https://www.drinkbaar.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/green-home-hgtv-small-living-room-ideas-arrangement-decorate-classy-simple-contemporary-white-design-cozy.jpeg Look for sofas and chairs with narrow arms. There is no sense for chair arms to take up as much room as the chair seat. Glass top tables make a room more open, though you should have some closed storage in the room so that less used items can be kept close without cluttering table tops. http://www.losmanolo.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Living-room-cheap-glass-coffee-table-sets-furniture-minimalist-stained-varnished-round-shaped-contemporary.jpg
Lighting can make a room seem larger. Put a floor lamp in a dark corner. Even with light colored walls dark corners at night make a room close in. Uplighting can brighten a room without overwhelming as the light bounces off the wall and ceiling. Note that most light bulbs are warm white and flattering to skin tones, but "daylight" bulbs have a bluish tint that is harsh regardless of the wattage value. https://www.decorfacil.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/20170405sala-de-estar-pequena-5.jpg
Finally, limit the decorative items in the room. It's OK to have some magazines on your coffee table, but they need to be current. Decorate your walls with art or photos. If you have a collection, treat it as such by keeping it all together. That refers to family photos, figurines, or collectibles. Put these items in a bookcase or etagere. Even then, don't crowd them. It may be better to store some and switch them out from time to time.

I would use light/bright paint colors such as white or light gray
Lights paints are definitely a help in small rooms. One thing I've found in our own "smaller" spaces is to try to embrace the idea that the room isn't small - its cozy! Warm specific lighting like a small table lamp and extra throws can really help it feel, not small, but comforting!
