Hello! I have used medium sized plastic sweater boxes with the lid. Cut a hole 1/2way up the any side to keep snow out. I put mine on 2 stacked pallets we have a lot of snow here! Then I used styrofoam insulation sheets cut to fit the inside and bottom, then I insulted all around the outside and inside with bales of straw. The straw was lose on the inside.
Nikki, here are a few very good shelters for cats.

Some people put a styrofoam box inside a plastic tub and put a bit of straw between the two all around, then cut a hole in the bottom front of both and put a blanket inside. You might want to elevate it a bit like on a bench or table so neighborhood dogs do not try to get at them and they would feel safe.
Rubber maid tubs with lids better to use than the hard plastic ones & you'll need 2 for each house one smaller to fit inside the other. cut an opening on one side(smaller end/side with handles) on each tub; on inside tub completely cut square shape out and on outside tub lining up & mark the openings, cut one same place on outside tub but only cut across bottom and up the 2 sides leaving top piece of opening connected creating a flap; pull this flap up and bend/crease it so that it creates a roof over opening. put lid on small container. Add piece of foam board insulation to bottom of lrg tub then place small container on top of insulation inside lrg. container add more pieces of insulation all around outside edges between the 2 containers and another on top of small container then place lid on lrg. container. you can add bed/blanket/towel inside small container for cat to lie on or just add layers of newspaper. you can duct tape around theopening to close gap betwen tubs so it creates good seal between the 2 containers. these are good sturdy, long lasting, easy to clean, warm dry houses for outdoor animals. you can get full size sheet of foam board insulation at Lowes,Home Depot and cut it down to sizes for houses use a sharp razor knife/box cutter to cut it. I do volunteer work with Animal Defense League Spay Neuter Hotline TNR for ferals and these houses are what I show people to use for homeless, stray, free roaming pets and feral cats.
