Clean the brick... may take a scrub brush! Then PRIME (important!) and then apply two coats of a GOOD latex paint! ENJOY!
Lots of people paint brick. Keep in mind that if you use the fireplace, light colored paint is a maintenance hassle.
I would tile it with porcelain tile for a clean modern look.
If you use something flammable, like ship lap, you must keep it at least 12” away from the firebox and hearth.
I updated my dark brick fireplace by dabbing white, cream, beige and light gray latex paint on the bricks in a random pattern with a foam paintbrush. It looks so good now and works with any color scheme.
