It depends on what it's made of. If it's wood and badly damaged, you may have to sand and refinish it.
I've seen coffee tables with a painted surface on the top part in a Glossy pain that can be cleaned easily. Also pretty contact paper on top or wall paper that's then shellacked and you can also put glass on top of whatever you decide to do.
What is the top made off? What do you want to do?

We had an inexpensive small bar height table that just didn't stand up to normal use and was blistered and marred. We bought small glass tile sheets from a discount warehouse. After gluing them down and grouting, the table was gorgeous.
