To chime in with Mona, yes, I've successfully used potting mix with irises. Hope yours turn out beautifully!
If planting in your garden/lawn, use top soil mixed with sphagnum peat moss. The potting soil will drain too readily.
For a pot, I would use potting soil. To plant in the yard use a good topsoil.
Irises are not fussy when it comes to soil, provided it is well drained. They need lots of sun. When planting, remember that about a third of the rhizome should be above the ground. The soil should be well composted. They also do very well with liquid fertilizer.
Potting mix is a better quality soil with more nutrients than regular top soil so there is not reason why you cannot use it. As a matter of fact, your plants will probably do better due to the added nutrition.
