I've spray painted mine.
Hi Claire, You could decorate the fans or replace with Large Leaves or Fans etc.
Spray paint is a great option! You will have to take the whole fan down and take off the blades, and tape off any electrical before you paint it. If you are painting the metal give it plenty of time to dry and cure before you put it back up.
If you want to paint the blades, take them down clean them off and spray paint them outside.
If you want to paint the housing, then you’ll need to take it down clean and mask it and spray it.
You can buy a very nice one on sale for about $85.
Here are several Hometalk projects on the subject:

Claire....I would take the blades off and paint, stencil or use 1 ply napkins with mod podge...You can paint the rest of the fan, motor and connections for blades, with a spray paint.
Spray paint it a color and change out the shades!
