I love the idea, what a great alternative use of a plastic tote - This tutorial although not specific to plastic tortes, is a really good step by step set of instructions for building a pond which I can think you could use to create your own https://www.thegardenglove.com/how-to-build-a-pond-easily-cheaply-and-beautifully/
Looks like you can!
My only other thought would be the quality of the plastic tote and the weather, this comes from experience. I had the "bright idea'" of using a childs plastic pool in the backyard to grow strawberries.
It worked very well for 2 years, then the plastic degraded from hot summers/freezing winters and cracked into a whole lot of fragile pieces, no fun cleaning that up!
Yes, the plastic tote will deteriorate in about 2 years. It's the wrong plastic for that.
Hey...pinterest is my go to...especially for something you want to do. There are a ton of ideas and instructions you could pull from....plastic tote into yard pond
Redcatcec has a good point about using plastic designed for the purpose, espcecially if you are planning to put time and labour into the project.
Yes, the tote will break down after awhile.
A galvanized livestock watering container will last.
