Yes, although the vinyl may be cause the new material to 'slip', so removing it first may just be easier, Shay.
You need to remove the old upholstery first.
I would pick the fabric get it bigger then the size you need then lay on the floor opened lay the headboard on it then start pull material then staple pull staple on the back
