Diatemacous earth. The edible kind not the pool one which is poison. Kills anything that crawls through it. Can put on dogs or cats or spread in your house. About $15.00 at tractor supply for big bag.
Yes food grade DE works. I would not put it on the pets or people because it will dry the skin out so badly that it will crack and bleed.
Put it in the carpet and work it in. Avoid a lot of bare feet touching it, as well as pet feet.
DE works like diamond dust: the pests walk thorough it and it grinds through their exoskeletons where their legs rub next to their torsos.
avoid breathing the dust.

I spray the perimeter of my property and base of my house once a month with vinegar. Needs to be repeated after every rain event. I am in zone 9 and it doesn't rain that often here. It does help.
You need to make sure you find a product that sterilizes them. We tried every DIY product and ended up hiring an exterminator. It would have been cheaper to hire them in the first place. Lesson learned.
